Immerse
2025UI UX design, user research, figmaImmerse is a responsive joint messaging and language learning app rooted in safe and ethical data collection.
Research & Background
When brainstorming the concept for the app, I started by creating a data journal of my own life, focusing on three everyday activities. Considering how my data is collected by using automatic translate in WhatsApp led me to consider:
How I could create a more transparent, secure messaging platform?
How could it also be innovative in the app space?
Design Proposal
Key points: Immerse is an app aimed at creating a safe, personal language learning and messaging platform. Data collection is transparent, limited to second party sharing, and only collected to benefit the user.
Benchmarking
Benchmarked:
Whatsapp for it’s messaging/translation feature, Google Translate for it’s responsive design, and Duolingo for it’s friendly user centric approach.
User Personas
Two user personas and their tasks within the app serve as the frame work of the app.
(1) Carmen: A first time user aiming to use the app to translate arabic-english vice verse
(2) Bodhi: A seasoned user, studying abroad, using the app for practice and location specific features.
Initial Prototyping & Wireframing
Early prototyping started with simple greyscale wireframes to help determine the IA and navigation of Immerse. Key points:
The onboarding was still feeling too dense for an inviting app
A home screen with an overview is necessary
Buttons on chats work well, but are currently too small/tight
Navigating through the practice tab, to tips, then practicing a specific tip is a little too dense
Need to iron out navigation within separate tabs
